Spanish courses and mountain biking with Escuela Montalbán in Granada, Spain

The city of Granada has beautiful mountains and natural parks in its surrounding areas.

The favorite biking spot for the locals is a half day ride, arriving above the city with a decent into the cave district of Sacromonte, where we can find Flamenco and tapas bars and great views of the Alhambra from this hillside area.

For another half-day ride, there is a route in the Sierra de Huetor natural park,  nearby to the majestic Sierra Nevada. In this ride through pine and oak forests, we are presented with the views of the higher Sierra and its north face which, as it’s name implies, is covered in snow a greater part of the year.

An expert guide in mountain biking ensures that you will have a safe and the best possible experience. After the tours you can have the best post-ride experience ever by visiting the typical Arabic baths for a soak in the warm pools, a massage and stretch on hot stone beds to relax the body. Afterwards, when you’re feeling refreshed, continue with a tapa tour of good food and wine to complete your day.

Barrio de las Letras (Literary Quarter) lies in the heart of Madrid, between such attractions as Sol-Gran Vía and Paseo del Arte (Art Walk). Its boundaries are Calle de la Cruz, Carrera de San Jerónimo, Paseo del Prado and Calle Atocha. In the seventeenth century, the Golden Age of Spanish Literature, Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Quevedo, Tirso de Molina and Góngora, among other authors, had their homes here – hence the name. Some of the streets in this neighborhood pay tribute to this and other brilliant chapters of Spanish history, culture and art.

· We end the walk at with VISITING REINA SOFÍA MUSEUM

Located on the Art Walk, the Reina Sofía houses works by Dalí, Miró and Juan Gris as well as Picasso’s masterpiece: Guernica. The Reina Sofía Museum is housed in the Old Madrid General Hospital, which was built by Francisco Sabatini. In the early 2000s French architect Jean Nouvel led an expansion project which saw the erection of an auditorium, a library and new galleries inside a huge red building made from zinc and aluminium, which is adjacent to the old edifice. The Reina Sofía also has two other exhibition centres: the Velázquez and Glass palaces in El Retiro Park. They play host to temporary exhibitions and artistic installations devised specifically for these spaces

Festival of the May Crosses in Granada!

In many parts of the world, especially in Spain and specifically in Andalucía, the festival of the May Crosses is celebrated. This is, in fact, one of the most popular holidays in Granada, which will take place on the 3rd of May. Year by year, Granada has been a host city for thousands of visitors from all over Spain who want to enjoy this special day in a unique atmosphere.

This festival was founded by St. Helen in the 4th century who wanted to show special respect for the cross upon which Jesus was crucified. As the history tells us, St Helen had a son who dreamed of a cross, which would help him to win a battle he was losing. So, a large cross was built by his troops and then carried into the battle, which ultimately was won. The family was inspired by it so much that they converted to Christianity. St. Helen went to Jerusalem to find the authentic cross, which performed miracles, and urged people to continue worshipping after her death. The modern celebration tradition of the cross dressing has been revived in the 18th century.

Nowadays in Granada the City Council runs a competition to promote the tradition. A lot of crosses – decorated by thousands of carnations – compete for the prize. Moreover, courtyards, streets and squares, shops windows and schools are part of this contest too. As a result, Granada is decorated by thousands of flowers that perfume the city with amazing aroma. Women and children wear typical andalusian dress; decorate crosses, dance and sing. The Granadines walk around the city visiting the crosses, dancing and celebrating this special day.

We advise you to visit Plaza Larga, Casa de los Pisas or calle Zafra in Albaicin and the Corrala de Santiago in Realejo where crosses get the best prize every year. Moreover, Plaza del Carmen or Plaza Bib-Rambla and its surroundings are great places to enjoy the beauty of this tradition. There you can watch flamenco performances during the afternoon or evening on the 3rdof May.

Review: Pavel Borovskikh at Escuela Montalbán – TANDEM Granada

My name is Pavel Borovskikh. I’m a young student from Russia. I was 3 months at Escuela Montalbán in Granada doing an Intensive Spanish course, which included 2 classes of grammar and 2 conversation classes per day. I started from the very beginning and improved my Spanish very quickly thanks to a professionalism of the teachers and very well selected groups. In fact, I was able to communicate with other students with the same level of Spanish, which helped us to learn Spanish more efficiently with a help of a teacher and have fun as well.

The staff of the Spanish school was extremely friendly and helpful, especially Paco. In the first day they helped me with my accommodation, informed me about different possibilities and important places in the city, and helped me to get my debit card in a bank, which was incredibly important as well.

The accommodation was provided by the school. In the apartment I lived with 4 Spanish persons, who helped me to boost my Spanish and experience Spanish culture and traditions. They were very friendly, kind and open-minded.

On the one hand, teachers were very professional and provided well-structured content. On another hand, they were very funny making a lot of jokes. Thus, they delivered a great combination of serious and funny content, which helped us to feel comfortable and learn Spanish in a great atmosphere.

Another important part of learning Spanish language and culture took place outside of our classes. The school organized different social and cultural activities in the evenings and on weekends. In the first week we went to the Arabic bath, which helped me to relieve stress from the first days of my adaptation to a new country. Moreover, I discovered an incredible art-form, which was born in Granada and called Flamenco. The flamenco show included very emotional and expressional music and dance. I fell in love with it and would love to experience it again. Another incredible activity was a tapa tour with the teacher Marisa, when almost all the students went out together to explore the tapas culture in different local bars. There is a tradition in Granada to give tapas for free when you order a drink.

I would definitely recommend this school to everybody, who wants to learn Spanish and discover a great culture of the beautiful Granada and Spain in general.

Spanish and Arabic Culture in Granada

Our member school Escuela Montalbán – TANDEM Granada  offers a new private Spanish programme for advanced levels related to Arabic history, art and culture in Granada!

As the last city to be returned to the Christian conquistadors after several hundred centuries of Muslim ruling, Granada still bears evidence to its Arabic influence to this day. The Alhambra Palace was built during the Moorish reign in the 15th century, and still stands proud and majestic on the hills of Granada.

Other signs of Arabic influence can be seen in the Albaicín. Perched on a hilltop it consists of steep cobblestoned paths and white-washed houses. Arabic teahouses and Moroccan shops line the narrow street that leads up to the hilltop.

Students participate in a 1 week Spanish course during the mornings. In the afternoons they visit the Alhambra, the old Arabic quarter Albaicín and the Arabic bath. The tour guide will complement the guided visits with daily workshops about Arabic art, music and cooking.
